One g roup w as add- ed in w ith pow dered act ivated carbon as the carrier w hile the other group w as not added in w ith any carrier. The physica l characteristics and m icrob iolog ical phase characterist ics under anaerobic cond itions and in the form ation process of granu lar sludge w ere comparatively stud ied. T he results show that bo th groups o f reactors are able to form granu lar sludge, but the reactor w ith the carrier fo rm ed m ore granular sludge than the reacto r w ithout the carrier w ith in the sam e operation tmi e, the particle size be ing 1. 2 ~ 1. 4 mm, wh ich is 2 t mi es of the size of granu lar 3 sludge in the reacto rw ithout the carrier.
