Chapter 8 International Payments Overview In international trade practice, the buyer is obliged to pay the seller the agreed amount, in the agreed currency, within the agreed period of time and by the agreed method of payment. Therefore, it is of essential importance to define in a sales contract the various terms for payment. 1. Payment Amount  2 Payment Currency  ? An important part of payment terms of a sales contract. ? The payment currency may depreciate or appreciate in the international financial market between the time of the conclusion of a sales contract and settlement of the payment. So the exporter need consider the exchange risks while determining what currency is to be used for the payment of the consignment. ? In international payment practice, either the currency of the seller’s country or the currency of the buyer’s or the currency of a third country can be used. But it must be considered what currency is to be used for the sake of lessening risks of foreign exchange rate. Some ways used in determining the evaluation currency and the payment currency. 1.
