An Introduction to Dujiangyan City and Its Post-earthquake Reconstruction Dujiangyan city, formerly named Guan County is located in the northwestern Chengdu plain. As a county-level city of Chengdu, Dujiangyan city is 48 km away from Chengdu and named after its well-known Dujiangyan irrigation project. With an area of 1,208 km2 and a population of 660,000, there are 19 villages and towns, 1 provincial economic development zone, 199 administrative villages and 44 urban communities of which 24 are in the urban area under the jurisdiction of Dujiangyan city. Boasting the Qingcheng Mountain—Dujiangyan World cultural heritage, Dujiangyan has been successively crowned the laurels of “China Excellent Tourism City”, “National Key Scenic Spot”, “National Historical and Cultural City”, “National Ecologic Demonstration Area”, “The most Charming City of China”. Dujiangyan city as a whole, especially the urban area has been hit hard by the 5.12 wenchuan devastating earthquake in 2008 during which 3,091 citizens were killed, 10,560 were injured and the direct economic loss was 53.665 billion yuan. The majority of houses in the rural and urban area of the whole city were ruined and damaged, among which the collapsed housing area amounted to 4.61 million m2 and the damaged housing area was up to 41.26 million m2. Particularly, more than 50% of the houses in the downtown cannot be used as shelters. Over 95% of the houses in and along the mountain area were ruined and damaged. The damaged school building area was over 600,000 m2 in total, among which the main teaching buildings of 5 schools collapsed, 79 schools were severely or moderately damaged, accounting for 86% of the total number of schools, and the teaching facilities suffered from a loss of 1.12 billion yuan.
