Related Background Information 1. the seal-shaped house of Yunnan 云南“一颗印” Ayiwang Uyghur Houses in Xinjiang 新疆维吾尔阿依旺民居 Ayiwang, which is also called as the summer room, is a common form of Uyghur residential building. It has about 300~400 years history. “Ayiwang” refers to the front hall with a skylight (also called summer room). It serves multi purposes like a living room; the back rooms are bedrooms, also known as “winter rooms”, which usually have no windows. The design of the house can be very flexible. All the rooms are connected together, with the courtyard surrounding the houses. 3. Qiang Village in the mountains of western Sichuan Province 四川山区的羌寨 The Qiang people built their homes from stone, earth and timber, judging all measurements by eye, rather than designing scientifically; yet all buildings have stood firm, straight and long. The Qiang houses usually have five stories. Livestock is kept on the first floor, and the living room, bedrooms and kitchen are on the second and the third. The fourth is used for storage and the fifth is a place of worship where white stones are arranged upon which sacrifices are offered. 4． Stone Sheet House in Guizhou 贵州石板屋 Buyei is the second largest (Miao is the 1st) major minority ethnic group in Guizhou Province. Buyei people build stone sheet houses with a very unique style. These stone sheet houses use stone bricks to build the wall. It can be 5-6 meters high. Then the roof is covered by shale stone sheet. In short, with the exception of wooden purlin, rafter, all the others are made of stone, including the household stuff such as tables, stools, stoves, etc. These houses keep wind, rain and snow outside. They are cool in summer and warm in winter. Moisture proof and fire proof.
