Unit Six Ancient Towns I. Introduction to the unit 1. The theme of this unit is about ancient towns in China. 2. The intensive reading , Section A, presents an article about Lijiang ancient town .As a tour guide or an English major , it’s necessary for him to learn something about ancient towns in China, which including the representing ones, the location, people, and customs etc. They should also learn how to talk about the issue. 3. The extensive reading, Section B, presents a brief introduction about Pingyao ancient town , which is also considered to be one of the most popular ancient towns in China. 4. Students are expected to achieve the following objectives after learning: Get a general knowledge about the issue of Ancient Town by scanning or skimming. Master certain number of professional terms, new words and proper expressions related to the topic of Ancient Towns. Use all they have learned in this unit to make a presentation to the class or their peers. Search online for more information around the topic. II. Related Background Information Section A 1.Square Street 四方街 This is the heart of the town which once served as the most important hub on the Ancient Tea Caravan. Since the Ming Dynasty, merchants have come over from all over the places, bringing with them the different cultures at same time. The street has also been the centre of cultural an economic exchanges in Lijiang for several hundred years. During the early years of the Yuan dynasty, about 1000 families inhabited Lijiang Ancient Town. The town continued to grow and reached its peak during the Ming (AD 1368-1644) and Qing (AD 1644-1911) Dynasties. Square Street lies at the core of Lijiang, with the entire city spreading out in all directions from that point. Most of the dwellings are structures made of brick and wood with carved doors and painted windows. In order to conserve the structures and maintain the integrity of the buildings, no motorized transport is allowed inside the city
