DEMO LESSONNSCE SB UNIT 2 FOOD AND DRINK – ACTIVE READING (2) CHOCOLATE By Dr. Lixian Jin Prof. Martin Cortazzi De Montfort University the University of Warwick UK INTRODUCTION Learning Objectives: students will Practise skimming and scanning skills for reading Obtain specific and general content / information from the expository text – ‘chocolate’, which mainly gives information and explanation Understand some language features and cultural information in the text Learn some expressions and grammar points for language use INTRODUCTION Learning outcomes: students will Enhance their reading skills by using skimming and scanning techniques through in and out of classroom exercises Get to know the history of chocolate and its manufacture specifically Get to know how chocolate may affect people in general (e.g. positive and negative effects) Use some expressions and grammar points from the text INTRODUCTION Learning methods: Pair / group work Specific reading tasks Specific speaking tasks Time allocated: 50 minutes ACTIVITY 1 WARMING-UP: THE LANGUAGE CONTEXT P.20 Pair work in groups Groups 1 6 SA= a TV reporter; SB = a passerby Groups 2 7 SA= a manager; SB = a job seeker Groups 3 8 SA= a radio reporter; SB= a studio guest Groups 4 9 SA= a marketing officer; SB= a chocaholic Groups 5 10 SA= a doctor; SB= a new parent ACTIVITY 2 READING AND SPEAKING FOR PRACTISING SCANNING SKILLS Page 21 Groups 1-3 READ Paragraph 1; Groups 4-7 = Paragraph 2; Groups 8-10 = the Last Paragraph. After reading, discuss your answer in relation to Exercise 2 with the person next to you.
