Objective To investigate the highfrequency ultrasound (HFUS) in rheumatoid arthritis ( A) of small joints of hands in patientsw ith the diagnosis of disease. M ethods H ighresolution ultrasound was used to scan bilateralmetacarpo phalangeal joints (MCP) and proxmi al interphalangeal joints ( PIP) in 23 patients w ith rheumatoid arthritis( A group). U ltrasound findings included synovial thick ness, vascularity and association changes of soft tissue around joints. All of these find ingswere comparedw ith 20 healthy volunteers ( control group). R esu lts Joint effu sion was found in 303 joints. Synovial hypertrophy was found in 264 joints, inwhich 31 jointswere shown vascularity by color Doppler flow mi age ( CDFI). This number was increased to 76 joints by using color Doppler energy mi age ( CDE).
