Phone: +61 2 Fax: +61 2 69 332587, E-mail: lwang@csu.edu.au, _____________________________________________________________________________ Abstract Objective: To investigate the levels of pericardial fluid and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and to evaluate the relationship between pericardial BNP and ventricular function. Methods: Plasma and pericardial BNP concentrations were measured in 18 patients underwent surgical repair of ventricular septal defect (VSD) Results: The levels of BNP in the pericardial fluid (285.46±135.59pg/ml) were higher than that in the plasma (34.28±19.47pg/ml) (P=0.046). Pericardial BNP was correlated with the plasma BNP (r=0.987, p0.001). A good correlation was also found between the pericardial BNP levels and left atrial diameter, left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic diameter, left ventricular ejection fraction, right ventricular diameter and pulmonary arterial pressure (p0.05). Conclusions: The levels of BNP in pericardial fluid were higher than in the plasma. Similar to plasma BNP, pericardial BNP is also related to the ventricular structure and function.
