To facilitate invasion of the host tissue, plant pathogens need to secret various cell wall-degrading enzymes (CWDEs) such as polygalacturonase (PG) and endo--1,4-xylanase [7, 13, 14, 15]. The important roles of these enzymes in pathogenesis have been demonstrated in numerous pathosystems [8, 9, 11]. To counteract the action of CWDEs, plants have developed a variety of strategies, including expression of genes encoding polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIPs), which are cell wall proteins able to inhibit the action of fungal polygalacturonase [3, 12]. In some pathosystems, PGs from fungal pathogens can trigger plant defense response, likely through pathogen/microbe-associated molecular pattern (PAMP/MPAP)-triggered immunity (PTI), in which PG proteins devoid of the enzymatic activity may function as MAMPs [5, 10, 16].
