Based on the defini tion of literary style and the contrast ive studies betw een Chinese and English styles, this paper elucidates, through successful examples in translation practice, that style is translatable. Yet the appraisement of the style of translated literature is a complicated and systemat ic project which involves various aspects, su ch as the translator, the readers and the historical and cultural factors of the target language society. Therefore, the criteria for the appraisement of translation should not be simplex . The source text should not be the only or the highest target according to which translat ion is evaluated.
