What is the Science? A. Einstein: Science is the attempt to make the chaotic diversity of our sense-experience correspond to a logically uniform system of thought. Ernst Mayr: Science is not an accumulation of facts, rather science is the search for an understanding of the world around us. 第一部 科學本体篇 研究不只在「puzzle solving」，更重要的是在探求ultimate (演化上和歷史上)的問題。在這價值上，我們建立我們的「生命哲學」。這些問題的挑戰，使我們的生活更富有，也使我們更能瞭解人類生存的意義。 §Science as a way of knowing-- XXX a project of the education committee of the American Society of Zoologists cosponsored by The American Society of Naturalists The Society for the Study of Evolution The Biological Sciences Curriculum Study The American Institute of Biological Sciences The American Association for the Advancement of Science The Association for Biology Laboratory Education The National Association of Biology Teachers The Genetics Society of America ASZ的「教育改善計劃」 問題：美國科學教育的功能，有嚴重的下降趨勢。 原因：大學的科學教育太偏重片斷的知識，特別是「摩登的」知識。整体性與歷史性的科學架構，卻被忽略。學生因而沈溺在「知識海」中，無法認識過去，也無法推求未來。屈服於必要是「摩登的」誘惑。 ASZ的「教育改善計劃」 計劃： 從1983年起，每年一個科目。探討這一個科目教學方法與內容。 第一年計劃(1984)：Evolutionary Biology 第二年計劃(1985)：Human Ecology 第三年計劃(1986)：Genetics (遺傳學) 第四年計畫(1987)：Developmental Biology 第五年計畫(1988)：Form and Function 第六年計畫(1989)：Cell and Molecular Biology 第七年計畫(1990)：Neurobiology and Behavior (1990-1991)= a conceptual framework for Biology §「摩登」(modern)的陷阱 這是一個知識爆炸的時代。 知識成長的速率 學習的速率。 每位教授都有能力，以「新知識」將學生沉溺於「知識海」中。 §「摩登」(modern)的陷阱 肇致的問題： 學生無能力獨立自主，開創未來。 就算緊跟「新知識」，其實已經是落後至少5-10年。 任何「新知識」都須要經過「考驗」。緊跟「新知識」，有可能是「捕風捉影」。 polywater 為例。 §摩登的陷阱 P
