Amathematicalmorphologicalapproachforregionofinterestcodingof microscopyimagecompression XIAWei-qiang1,2,FANShang-chun1, XINGWei-wei1, LIUChang-ting LITian-zhi3 WANGJun-feng3 1.SchoolofInstrumentationScienceandOpto-electronicsEngineering,BeihangUniversity,Beijing100191,China; 2.StateKeyLaboratoryofVirtualRealityTechnologyandSystems,BeihangUniversity,Beijing100191,China; 3.GeneralHospitalofthePeoplesLiberationArmy,Beijing100853,China Abstract:Anovelmathematicalmorphologicalapproachforregionofinterest(ROI)automaticdetermination andJPEG2000-basedcodingofmicroscopyimagecompressionispresented.Thealgorithmisvery,fastandre quireslowercomputingpower,whichisparticularlysuitableforsomeirregularregion-basedcellmicroscopyim ageswithpoorqualities.Firstly,anactivethreshold-basedmethodisdiscussedtocreatearoughmaskofre gionsofinterest(cells).Andthensomemorphologicaloperationsaredesignedandappliedtoachievetheseg mentationofcells.Inaddition,anextramorphologicaloperation,dilation,isappliedtocreatethefinalmask withsomeredundanciestoavoidthe“edgeeffect” afterremovingfalsecells.Finally,ROIandregionofback ground(ROB)areobtainedandencodedindividuallyindifferentcompressionratioflexiblybasedonthe JPEG2000,whichcanadjustthequalitybetweenROIandROBwithoutcodingforROIshape.Theexperimen talresultscertifytheeffectivenessoftheproposedalgorithm,andcomparedwithJPEG2000,theproposedalgo rithmhasbetterperformanceinbothsubjectivequalityandobjectivequalityatthesamecompressionratios.
