Methods In-depthinterviewswith20PLHAwereconductedinMarch1999.Participantswere recruitedfromtheUSAID-fundedLongitudinalEnhancedEvaluationofARTProject,whichtracksa cohortofeligiblePLHAreceivingtreatmentatfivecollaboratingtreatmentcentersinGuangxi AutonomousRegion,China.Aninterviewguide(semi-structuredwithopen-endedquestions)was developedtoprovideaqualitativeexaminationofthequalityoflifeofPLHA. Results ParticipantsidentifiedthatARTaffectsphysicalhealth,includingtheexperienceofpain,side effects,andopportunisticinfections.ARTimposeslifestyleconstraintssuchasreducedmobilitydueto drugprocurement,andsocialrestrictionsduetothedailydrugregimen.Participantsdiscussedthe psychologicalburdenoftakingdrugs,andthefearofaccidentaltransmissiontoothers,orhavingtheir diseasestatusknownbyothers,aswellasoptimisticfeelingsabouttheirfutureduetoART.ARTposesa significantdrainonindividualseconomicresourcesduetorelatedmedicalcosts,andinabilitytoseek seasonalmigrantlaborduetoreducedmobility. Conclusion WhileChinasnationalfreeARTprogramimprovedthephysicalhealthofthosesurveyed, theirsocialandeconomicneedswereleftunaddressed.ToimprovelifeoutcomesforPLHA,andby extens
