A successfulmountain rescueoperation inYushuEarthquake WuTianyi，LiSuzhi，HouShike ，OuzhuLuobu4 (1．HighAltitudeMedicalResearchInstitute，Xining810012，China； 2．TibetMilitaryGeneralHospital ofPLA，Lhasa850007，China； 3．ChineseInternationalSearchandRescueTeam，Beijing100039，China； 4．TibetUniversityMedicalCollege，Lhasa850002，China) Abstract：OnApril14，2010，anearthquakereaching7．1RichterscalestruckJieguTownofYushu．Morethan2698 peoplewereconfirmeddead，and12135wereinjured，ofwhich1434wereseverelyinjured．Rescueoperationwascar— riedoutsoonafterthedisaster；however，therescueteamsfacegreatchallengesofaltitudehypoxia，freezingtempera— tureandverybadweather．Thus，1434severeinjurieswererapidlytransportedairliftedtohospitalsinXiningand neighboringprovincesforeffectivetreatment．Theextremitytrauma(49．9％)wasthemostcommonpatternofinjuries． Asphyxia(40．8％)wasbyfarthemostimportantreasonofrdeath．Ahighincidenceofacutealtitudeillnessinthe lowlandrescuerswasaspecialmedicalproblem duringthehighestearthquakeinYushu．Wehavelearnedmorelessons from YushuEarthquake． Keywords：YushuEarthquake；mountainrescue；medicalemergency；acutealtitudeillness weredestroyed(Fig．2)，resultinaheavycasualty． 1 Introduction OnApril14，2010，an earthquakereaching7．1 ontheRichterscalethathitthetownofJiegulocated in Yushu Tibetan AutonomousPrefecturein southern QinghaiProvinceinNorthwestChina．at7：49a．m． (Beijingtime)．Theepicenterwasabout30kmaway from JieguTown．andthelocationis96。3744”degree eastlongitude．33。16 16 degreenorth latitude．ata depthofabout33km (obtaineddataaccordingtothe ChinaEarthquakeNetworksCenter ．JieguTown is thecultural，economicandpoliticalcenterofYushu， Fig．1 A map
