ChineseJournalofBiomedicalEngineering(EnglishEdition)Volume23Number4, December2014 Artifacts of Functional Electrical Stimulation on Electromyograph DUAN Ren-quan, ZHANG Ding-guo State Key Laboratory of Mechanical System and Vibration, School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, China Abstract. Thepurposeofthisstudyistoinvestigatedifferentfactorsoftheartifact insurfaceelectromyography (EMG)signalcausedbyfunctionalelectricalstimulation (FES). The factors investigated include the size of stimulation electrode pads, the amplitude, frequency, andpulsewidthofthestimulationwaveformandthedetecting electrodepoints.Wecalculatetherootmeansquare (RMS)ofEMGsignaltoanalyzethe effectofthesefactorsontheM-waveproperties.TheresultsindicatethattheM-wave mainlydependsonthestimulationamplitudeandthedistributionofdetectingelectrodes, butnotontheotherfactors.Thisstudycanassistthereductionofartifactandthe selectionofdetectingelectrodepoints. Key words: electromyography (EMG);artifact;functionalelectricalstimulation (FES);rootmeansquare(RMS) INTRODUCTION Electromyography (EMG) signals are superimposed electric signal of motor unit action potentials, which can be used as a diagnostic tool to identify muscle abnormalities(muscle atrophy, neuromuscular disease and movement control disorders) by analyzing and decoding the different features of EMG signal. Using these features can also assist the amputees to control prostheses, which can make their life easier [1]. There are three types of EMG electrodes in dif
