Is this moral promise useful? SKETCH BY SUN ZHEN The graduates attended a symposium on graduates self-discipline in future work, last Thursday. After the symposium, they composed and signed an agreement on probity and self-discipline. They also issued an open letter, calling on their peers all over the country to be self-disciplined when they go to work.The agreement does not have any legal binding power. It only embodies the graduates moral willingness to self-discipline.The news caused a heated debate on and off the campus.Some questioned the effectiveness of the non-binding moral agreement, calling the act a meaningless show.Others applauded the act, saying it shows the graduates willingness to do the right thing and this should be praised and encouraged.So, is this kind of morally-binding agreement necessary in society?---------------------------------------probity: 廉洁，正直embody: 体现symposium: 座谈会 YES The action itself is well intentioned and should be praised. The law cannot cover everything and morality should be encouraged. 1. The action shows the graduates willingness to do the right thing in the future. This action itself is well intentioned. Although the agreement is non-binding, the morality exists. As long as at least one of them keeps their word, the agreement will be meaningful. 2. The rule of law or any other forceful means cannot solve everything. There are always things that laws cannot cover. Thats when morality takes effect and why its so important. Promoting moral traits such as self-discipline should be praised. NO Morality-based agreements are non-binding. More effective means could be applied if people really wanted them. 1. The so-called self-discipline agreement has no legal, economic
