Chapter 7 String Operation Contents: String Instructions Repeat Prefixes Applications What is string? A string in the 80x86 architecture refers to a contiguous collection of bytes, words, or doublewords in memory. Strings and arrays are actually the same except for the way we look at them. Example for string String Instructions String instructions are special instructions in IA-32 instruction set. They are used to operate data string in memory. String data type The operands in string instructions are contiguous collection of bytes, words or doublewords. The bytes, words , or doublewords of these strings are processed one at a time by the string instruction. Operands its addressing mode Each string instruction applies to a source string , a destination string , or both. Each element can be located by register indirect addressing mode. ESI: store the address of source string. EDI: store the address of destination string. Where are the strings For segmented memory model: Source element is in the data segment Destination element is in the extra segment For flat memory model: No distinction between segments Automatically change ESI EDI Although each string instruction operates on only one string element at a time, it always gets ready to operate on the next element. This is done by changing the register ESI EDI. How does EDI ESI change? DF=0 EDIESI will be incremented by 1(byte), 2(word), 4(double word) DF=1, EDIESI will be decremented by 1(byte), 2(word), 4(double word) How to set DF STD DF=1 CLD DF=0 Other control instructions Set/clear DF STD CLD Set/clear IF STI CLI These instructions will be used when you programming interrupt programs.
