1635 Message from the Mayor of New York Hello fellow mayors, I bring greetings from the crossroads of the world, the city that never sleeps, the big apple. Where else? New York City. New York is actually a lot like Europe: our citizens hail from many different countries and speak more than 170 different languages, Im still learning a few of them, so today Ill stick to English. First, let me commend you on your pledge to reduce your cities carbon emissions by more than 20% by the year 2020. Here in New York, our ambitious sustainability agenda, called Plan YC, sets a similar goal: reducing our greenhouse gas emissions of 30% by the year 2030. And we are committed to doing that even as our population grows to an expected 9 million people. You know, cities consume 75% of the worlds energy and produce 80% of its greenhouse gases. So our global warming clearly demands global action. Those of us in city governments can and must take a leading role. The best part is: we dont have to choose between protecting the environment on one hand and promoting growth and development on the other: improving energy efficiency and investing in green technology will help our environment and spur economic growth, through collective leadership, considered action and thoughtful investment, we can create a cleaner, greater world for our children and grandchildren.
