Effective Macroscale Measures of Microscale Heterogeneity A Multiresolution Approach

E ective Macroscale Measures of Microscale Heterogeneity A Multiresolution Approach Ben Zion Steinberg Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Faculty of Engineering Tel{Aviv University, Tel{Aviv, 69978 Israel 1 Intro duction A fundamentally dicult problem in wave theory is the prediction of the resp onse eld when an excitation is applied to a structure that is describ ed over a wide range of length scales. Coupling across scales is the diculties physical genesis. From the mathematical p oint of view it stems from the essentially nonlinear dep endencies of a system resp onse on the co ecients of the governing equations. These nonlinearities exist even if the governing formulation is linear, as is the case in many problems of interest. When a time harmonic excitation is applied to such a system, it is convenient to use the wavelength as a discriminator of the various length scales p ertaining to the problem. Although not precisely de ned yet, this wavelength would usually b e that asso ciated with the resp onse eld of a corresp onding \background, or homogeneous, problem. We shall refer to the scales in the order of and ab ove as the macroscale, and to the range of scales much smaller than (say, =50) as the microscale. A complexity frequently encountered in scattering problems is the one characterized by a microscale heterogeneity that extends over physical domains measured on the macroscale. This heterogeneity|non-stationary when observed over the macroscale dimensions|is referred to as a \complex scatterer. We wish to estimate the eld radiated far from a scatterer with a heterogeneity of the articulated complex type, and to investigate its dep
