Eects of adaptive renement on the inverse EEG solution David M Weinstein Christopher R Johnson and John A Schmidt Department of Computer Science University of Utah Salt Lake City UT dweinstecsutahedu crjcsutahedu jascsutahedu ABSTRACT One of the fundamental problems in electro encephalography can b e characterized by an inverse problem Given a subset of electrostatic p otentials measured on the surface of the scalp and the geometry and conductivity prop erties within the head calculate the current vectors and p otential elds within the cerebrum Mathematically the general ized EEG problem can b e stated as solving Poissons equation of electrical conduction for the primary current sources The resulting problem is mathematically illp osed ie the solution do es not dep end continuously on the data such that small errors in the measurement of the voltages on the scalp can yield unb ounded errors in the solution and for the general treatment of a solution of Poissons equation the solution is nonunique However if accurate solutions to such problems could b e obtained neurologists would gain noninvasive access to patientsp ecic cortical activity Access to such data would ultimately increase the numb er of patients who could b e eectively treated for pathological cortical conditions such as temp oral lob e epilepsy In this pap er we present the eects of spatial adaptive renement on the inverse EEG problem and show that the use of adaptive metho ds allow for signicantly b etter estimates of electric and p otential elds within the brain through an inverse pro cedure To test these metho ds
