ANTH 5250 Fall 2011 Monday 6.30 p.m. -9.15 p.m. Seminars in the Anthropology of China I Teacher: Prof. Tan Chee-Beng cbtan@cuhk.edu.hk This course aims to introduce postgraduate students to the anthropological study of China and Chinese culture. The topics that will be discussed include: 1. Introduction: The Course and the History of Anthropology in China 2. Anthropology of China and Anthropology of Chinese Cultures 3. The Chinese Nation 4. Ethnicity and Identity 5. Lineage, Local Communities and Regions 6. Worldview and Social Relations 7. Religious Life 8. Marriage, Family and Gender 9. Post-Mao Socio-economic Change 10. Memory, Resistance and Political Development 11. Review: Anthropological study of China Readings: All required and some recommended readings that are in books are on reserve. Articles are available in the journals concerned or online. After using a journal, please return it to the shelf so other classmates can find it. Learning Outcome After following this course, students will have a good knowledge of the study of China by anthropologists, and will be able to pursue their own readings in this field. They will be familiar with the major works and the major topics studied as well as the anthropologists who have done research in China. Course Requirements (MA and M.Phil. Students): 1. Class participation: 10% 2. 6 short review papers (4-5 pages each, to be submitted at least one day before the class on the topic concerned): 90% [The University requires all papers to be checked by CUPIDE (the Chinese University Plagiarism Identification Engine System).
