EarthquakeResearch in China Volume26，Number4，2012 EarthquakeSurfaceRupture FeaturesandTectonicSignificance oftheTazangFaultin theEasternPartoftheEast K nlun FaultZone ZhangJunlong，RenJinwei，FuJundong，HuChaozhong，XiongRenwei，ChenChangyun，andYnagPanxin InstituteofEarthquakeScience，ChinaEarthquakeAdministration， Beijing100036，China TheEastKunlunfaultzoneislocatedinthenorthernmarginoftheBayanHarblock．The studyofearthquakerupturebehaviorin thefaultzoneisofimportanceforunderstanding thefutureseismicrisk in northwestSichuan．A numberofgeologicalfield investigations， typicalm icro topography DGPS measurements and sample dating show that the earthquakeactivityoftheEastKunlun faultzoneextendstothenorthboundaryofZoige basin，asegm entknownastheLuochasegm entofTazangfault．Inthesatelliteimage。the segm entisseenclearlyasgrayandyellow strips．Theearthquakedeofrmationzonemainly featuresfaultscarp，valleysontheslope，offsetgulliesandterraces，lineardistribution of plants，waterfall，faultspring，faultsagpond，andlandslide，collapseandtalusassociated with surface rupturing． These phenom ena are distributed interm ittently along the re． existingfaultand ofrm a 一50km ．1ong inverseL．shapeddeofrmationzone．Faultactivities causedleft-lateral0fflsetofgulliesandterraces．with horizontaldisplacementconcentrated at5．5m 一6m ，18m 一23m ，68m 一75m ． and 200m 一220m 。respectively．The recent earthquakeoccurredbetween340±3O一500±30BP．Themacroepicenterislocated5km ～ 7km northwestofBenduo village，with magnitudeof 7．3 —7．4。maximum coseismic displacementof6m ．horizontaldisplacement5．5m 一6m and verticaldisplacement0．2m — O．5m ．beinginaproportionof5：1—10：1．Thesephenom enashow thattheTazangfaultis thecausative fault of this earthquake． The faultis a Holocene active fault and was dom inated recently by left-lateralmovementwith a smallamountofthrustcomponent undercompressiveshearstress．Thischaracteristicissim ilarto the movementin other segmentsoftheEastKunlunfaultzone．Theresultsofth
