The Cultural Differences and Functions of Body Language between English and Chinese 英汉身势语文化差异及语用功能 1 Introduction “ When we speak, we use much more than just words. We also communicate with our face, our hands, and even our own bodies. This kind of communication can be called ‘body language’or‘non–verbal communication’.” [1](P43)Body language is the unspoken communication that goes on in every face-to-face encounter with another human being. It tells their true feelings to you and how well your words are being received. “Not only is a large QUANITY of communication non-verbal in nature, but the QUALITY is high as well. For example , if a person says something positive while his face looks negative, we are more likely to believe what he has said. In most cases, we will believe the non-verbal facial expression .In the end; his words will not succeed in communicating his message. If we want to succeed in our everyday conversations, we really must learn to speak with our body well! ” [2] (P43) In most situations, intercultural communicators do not share the same mother tongue or second language. Besides, there are many communication problems in the nonverbal reality. So the study of the differences of body language between Chinese and English has become more and more important. This paper will make a study of the cultural differences and functions of body language between Chinese and English in an attempt to make people from China and English-spoken countries understand each other better and communicate more effectively. ? 2 Cultural Differences of Body Language between Chinese and English 2.1 Facial Expression? “The face has been called an ‘organ of emotion’, because we constantly read facial expressions to understand what others are feeling. The face provides vital clues to our own feelings and those of the people around us.
