Abstract Language policy, the government‘s declarations or tradition and culture‘s formulation on language use and usage of a particular area, is the primary mechanism of organizing, managing and manipulating language behaviors. As an open system, language policy theories are always researched with other theories, such as linguistic culture, educational policy etc. In this thesis, theories of ecolinguistics and theory of economics of language are adopted, the theory of ecolinguistics as its philosophical foundation and theory of economics of language as economic foundation. Based on the analysis of the history of American English and the reality of American language policy, it comes to the conclusion that the American language policy is characterized as ―maintaining the
