Case Study: A Problem in Ethics Daniel Cleaver is the CEO of Lifeline, a British manufacturer of electrical appliances. During the last three years, his General Manager Carl Hanks, has turned Lifeline around from being a loss-making company into a profitable organization with an exciting range of new products. Both men want the company to grow as fast as possible. Kelly Damper is the secretary to Carl Hanks. Kelly joined Lifeline just over a year ago. In the beginning she was considered to be an outstanding employee. However, more recently she has been having difficulties working with Carl. They have been seen shouting at each other, and often Kelly appears upset when leaving his office. Daniel has received the following memo. MEMORANDUM PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL To: Daniel Cleaver From: Kelly Damper Date: June 03, 2002 Subject: Compliant about Carl Hanks I would like to make a formal complaint about Carl Hanks’ unprofessional behavior. Mr. Hanks has been putting pressure on me to have a personal relationship. When I showed no interest he became aggressive and unpleasant. He gave me too much work, set impossible deadlines, and criticized me in front of the other staff. Mr. Hanks gives orders to me rather than polite instructions. He never encourages or praises me. I think he would like to hire a new secretary who would be more “friendly” to him. He has frequent long lunches with female staff. He returns to the office late in the afternoon, then expects me to work overtime (unpaid) in the evening. I feel that unless the situation improves, I shall be unable to continue working for the company. K. D. After receiving the memo, Daniel decided to consult Carl’s personal file, and found that there was an incident involving a female employee which caused concern. The woman accused Mr. Hanks of sexual harassment. There was a court case, but he was found not guilty.
