Topic 3 Lesson Planning What is a lesson plan? A lesson plan is a framework of a lesson in which teachers make advance decisions about what they hope to achieve and how they would like to achieve it. Macro Planning vs. Micro Planning for a longer period of time vs. for a specific unit or a lesson often done by a group of teachers vs. usually done by teachers individually A Planning Continuum What is a lesson plan? To do macro planning, we should take into consideration: (pp.54-55) the profession the institution the learners the curriculum/ syllabus the textbook the objectives Why is lesson planning important? Task 1: Discuss in groups of 4. Why is lesson planning important? Some people think that lesson planning makes teaching in classroom less creative and flexible. Do you agree? What should be included in a lesson plan? Task 2: Work individually. On Appendix 1 are some teachers’ opinions about and strategies for lesson planning. Read them and decide whose opinion you share and which type of lesson plans you would like to make yourself. Task 3: Work in pairs and discuss which of the Elements of lesson plans (Appendix 2) below you would use in a lesson for teaching English. Tick those which you would like in your own lesson plan. What should be included in a lesson plan? A language lesson plan usually has the following components: background information teaching aims language contents and skills stages and procedures teaching aids end-of-lesson summary optional activities assignments teacher’s after-lesson reflection What should be included in a lesson plan? Teaching aims Teaching aims or objectives should focus on the learners’ performance rather than the teachers’. Task 4 (pp.56-57) Teaching aims should reflect the requirements specified in the curriculum or course syllabus.
