Strict time limits will be enforced on cars parking in front of airport terminals, more uniformed officers will be on patrol, and every piece of luggage destined for Indonesia will be screened. Additional X-ray scanners will be set up to scan passengers and their carry- on luggage at gates for flights bound for Indonesia, while discussions are underway with Indonesian carrier Garuda to step up screening of flights from Bali to Australia. All explosives detection equipment and available sniffer dogs and security patrols will be deployed. Australia also closed its consulate in Bali as a precaution following the suicide bombing outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta, which killed nine Indonesians and injured 180 other people, including a five-year-old Australian girl. Prime Minister John Howard announced the tightened security one day after he said there was no need to lift security levels. But Mr Howard said the measures did not mean that Australian airports were a target.
