Abstract: The research on environment al indicators has become an important field in environmental man- . agement This paper reviewed t he evolut ion of environmental indicators and classified them into three cate- gories for specific purposes, namely ( 1) for sustainable development; (2) for regional environmental plan- ning and managem ent ; and ( 3) for special issues and problem. T he authors also elaborated on the necessi- ty for constructing indicat or syst ems, and using the P-S-R model, developed an indicator system for urban environmental protection and ecological const ruction. T he framew ork of this system comprises five compo- nents: ( 1) environmental protection and pollution cont rol; (2) ecological protection and construction; ( 3) environmental management; ( 4) economic development; and, (5) urban and social development. The first , three component s form the main indicat or syst em w hile the last tw o components consti
