Is this the worlds most polluted river? * THE PRICE OF PROSPERITY(繁荣) It was once a gently flowing river, where fishermen cast their nets, sea birds came to feed and was full of natural beauty. Today, the Citarum（芝塔龙河） is a river filled with the waste of nine million people and hundreds of factories. Now only the tiny wooden fishing boat which floats through the rubbish reminds us of the presence of water. The Exxon Valdez oil spill(“瓦尔迪兹”号油轮石油泄漏事件) occurred in the Prince William Sound, 1989. It is considered to be one of the most serious human-caused environmental disasters .It spilled 10 million gallons of oil into the sea, and the oil eventually covered 1,300 square miles of ocean. On April 26, 1986, the worlds worst nuclear power disaster took place in Ukraine(乌克兰). Radiation spread over a large area of northern and central Europe. As a result ,Pripyat(普里皮亚季),which used to be the home for the workers and their families,became a dead city. Now there is 12% of the earths surface used as farmland. Some scientists say that the vast Amazon rainforest is being turned into desert because of cutting down trees.If the Amazon rain forest lose the ability of absorbing carbon dioxide , the global warming will become more and more serious. Red-----rain forest Green------farmland Aral Sea (咸海) is disappearing fast because of irrigation during last twenty years. The ice on the Arctic ocean is disappearing fast during the last decade. *
