Unit 10 Text A: Tips on Learning English(1) The secret for learning to speak English well is simple — practice speaking everyday and take every opportunity to use the words you know. There is no point in having a large store of words in your memory if you dont try to make as much use of them as you can. But, learning a language is the same as learning anything else—it will always be easier to learn if you have a reason for learning. In other words—MOTIVATION — is the greatest single help you can have to make your learning “a piece of cake.” What you need to do is think about “why” you are learning English and what you hope to gain from the study of the language. Once you have sorted this out, it then becomes a matter of deciding exactly what you need to know. In China, a lot of studies of English, as a second language, have to do with passing exams. You therefore need to know what these exams will involve and concentrate on learning as much as you can to meet those requirements. That, of course, is obvious, but the way you go about learning this might not be quite as obvious. If you are learning the language for the sole purpose of passing an exam, then most of your study time will concentrate on the technical aspects, the grammar, and building a vocabulary. However, if your purpose goes beyond the exam, and you plan to use the language in a practical way as part of your future career, then you need to focus on how best to apply your knowledge. One of the most important aspects of this is to recognise the differences between the way your native Chinese language is used and the way English is used. When you learn a second language—and it applies to anyone and any language—the first stage in trying to use that language is to mentally translate what you want to say from your native language into the foreign language.
