A healthy food in schools group has been established, and is currently supporting schools in the development of quality food provision for all schools, in preparation for the nutrient based standards that are due to be implemented in primary schools in September 2008 and secondary schools in 2009. In 2005, the government appointed a group called the school meals review panel, to recommend new standards for all school food. Their report, together with recommendations from the School Food Trust, proposed significant changes to ensure that schools were providing healthy food, prohibiting or restricting foods high in salt, sugar and fat, and ensuring minimum levels of nutritional standards were adhered to. This document is intended to support schools as they implement changes to food provision throughout the school day. It further aims to ensure that change takes place as part of a whole school approach, involving all members of the school community in the decision making process. Whilst the 2001 Food Guidance was being adhered to, it was not providing appropriate healthy options for all children and young people. In light of media attention on the matter, the government agreed to review the policy.
