GUIDELINES FOR THE COOPERATING TEACHER
Because of the day-to-day contact with the student teacher, the cooperating teacher exerts a great deal of influence upon the student teacher’s perceptions of the profession and has a great opportunity to provide professional guidance.
The following list of suggestions is included to help develop a positive relationship between the student teacher and the cooperating teacher.
It is most helpful for the cooperating teacher to share long-range plans with the student teacher upon his or her arrival at the school. During the first week of student teaching, a tentative schedule for the entire experience should be established. This schedule should allow for gradual increase in classroom leadership activities for the student teacher. The university supervisor is available to work with both the cooperating teacher and the student teacher in developing a schedule that is mutually acceptable.
Orientation
Introduce the student teacher to other members of the faculty, and share information about student files, counseling offices, attendance office, special education services, and other services, procedures or locations that would be important for the student teacher to know.
Encourage the student teacher to read the faculty handbook, teacher bulletins, and other materials relative to the functioning of the school.
Create a place for the student teacher to work, and enhance the co-worker image by providing access to all the tools of the classroom.
Expect student teacher to attend all departmental meetings, faculty meetings, workshops, and social functions sponsored by the school (provide the student teacher with a list of dates and times).
Acquaint the student teacher with the resources of the school such as the library, the computer lab, source of supplies, printing/copying procedures, and other essential information.
Set aside time for introductions to other personnel throughout the school.
Provide some avenue for early participat
