ECE 395 – ADSL Linked Lighting Chris Reeg & Yang ZhaoAbstract This project has the goal of creating an affordable lighting control system that communicates via TCP/IP over Ethernet. There are two physical modules. The first being the control box that has the faders and buttons to take user input. This unit also contains a memory that allows saved lighting configurations to be recalled (even after a power cycle). The other unit is a socket-box that is plugged into the wall and will allow for most standard types of lighting to be plugged into it. The two modules will talk to each other over Ethernet. Terms and Definitions TCP/IP : Transmission control Protocol / Internet Protocol This is the protocol which was used to communicate over the Ethernet medium. The TCP/IP protocol suite provides guaranteed data transmission and support for routing packets to other networks. In our particular application, this means that the lighting system could be control from a location not on the same network as the socket-box. Triac This device is a silicon based device that controls the flow of power in our dimming circuit. When the device is not being “triggered” there is no current flowing between the two main terminals. When a small current is applied to the gate, the triac is triggered and current will flow between the two main terminals. The current will continue to flow between the two main terminals even if the gate current is removed. When main terminal current returns to zero, the triac becomes latched in the blocking state and will not allow current between the main terminals to flow again until the gate is triggered once more. Variac A variac is a device that allows AC voltage to be controlled. Variacs are usually physically heavy and are built to handle large current loads.
