American Novelist (3) William Faulkner: A Rose for Emily John Steinbeck: The Grapes of Wrath J. D. Salinger: The Cather in the Rye William Faulkner (1897-1962) (short story writer, novelist ) born in an old southern family in 1897, grew up in Oxford, Mississippi. Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949. He died of a heart attack on July 6, 1962 the greatest American writer of the 20th century Famous for his portrait of the failure and decay of the South of America . Yoknapatawpha saga The Sound and the Fury (1929), his first masterwork Sanctuary (1931) Light in August (1932) Absalom, Absalom! (1936) Go Down Moses (1942) Intruder in the Dust (1948) major themes failure and decay of the South of America internal conflicts of human nature issues of class, sex and race Faulkners style long and hypnotic sentences Narration gaps Multiple point of view Juxtaposition, parallel structure streams of consciousness authorial transcendence mythic/biblical allusions scrambled chronology Multiple Points of View Faulkner was a master at presenting multiple points of view, showing within the same story how the characters reacted differently to the same person or the same situation. The use of the technique gives the story a circular form – wherein one event is the center, with various points of view radiating from it – rather than a linear structure, with one event following another by cause and effect, in logical progression of time. Stream-of-consciousness Most effectively used by James Joyce .That is, to tell a story by recording the thoughts of one character. Action and plot are less important than the reactions and inner musings of the narrator. Time sequences are often dislocated. The reader feels himself to be a participant in the story, rather than an observer, and a high degree of emotion can be achieved by this technique. In The Sound and the Fury , the whole story was told through the thoughts of one character. Light in August
