Wilson, MD, holder of the Charles Cameron Sprague Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Science, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center has devoted most of his 55-year career in the medical sciences to understanding sexual differentiation. His studies of androgens, together with Elwood Jensens studies of estrogens, demonstrated that steroid hormones localize to the nucleus and prefigured the discovery of nuclear hormone receptors. Dr. Wilson’s research also directed attention to the role of dihydrotestosterone in a common disorder, benign prostatic hyperplasia, which led to the first successful medical therapy of this condition. In addition to these extraordinary scientific achievements, his career as physician-scientist has been characterized by outstanding leadership in professional societies and exceptio
