Sockeye Training Camps: Recap and Notes Here are our notes from the training camp, the midweek practices, and the clinics held on mornings of the Moscow tournament. There was a huge amount of material covered in these practices. Our goal in this Recap is to list everything we did with the main focus points. We hope that this helps you remember what we did, so that you can design workouts and drills from those fundamental skills. Table of Contents: Training Camp Mornings Marking Throwing Cutting Defending Training Camp Afternoons Defense Offense Zone Training Camp Warmups Midweek Sessions Tuesday Drills Wednesday Drills Thursday Drills Friday Drills Tournament Clinics Sunday Clinics Monday Clinics TRAINING CAMP MORNINGS Marking Station (taught by Aaron and Ben): Fundamentals: Good ready position: Hands low to come up, chest up, elbows bench, low at ‘dancing height’, ready to move, balanced, force forehand is roughly 20 cm to the right of lining straight-up. Try to keep hands about a discs length back from the release point to avoid fouling throwers and challenge as large of an area as possible. Movement: ‘Blocking back’ to avoid fouls and get clean blocks, moving feet instead of leaning, adjust to the thrower’s favorite moves, be ready to mark for 20-30 seconds at a time (shake out legs on stoppages), come up under high throws to keep arms low, move in and high to challenge hammers, move away to avoid allowing a foul Strategies: Marking is where a defender has the most influence on the entire field. Stop the throw that is presented first, force the thrower to pivot, take a look behind while setting mark to see the receiving threats, practice making calls and calling fouls, decide what is the thrower’s best move and force them to do something else, these strategies work in any team defense: change to suit your defensive scheme. Drills: 1v1 marking: No throws, for form and to practice situations/conditioning 1v1 with movement: ‘Thrower’ tosses disc to themse
