* Typical alpha emitting radionuclides include Plutonium and Uranium. Many Transuranic wastes, those being transported to the WIPP facility in New Mexico, contain alpha emitting material. Alpha sources are used throughout industry for many processes. Transuranics are those elements listed beyond Uranium on the periodic table. * Typical beta emitting radionuclides include fission products and tritium. High beta doses are typically found following a nuclear explosion or in areas where spent nuclear fuels are stored/handled. * Typical gamma/x-ray emitting material includes fission products, radiography sources (Cobalt-60, Iridium-192, Cesium-137) and, of course, x-ray generating devices. Also used for medical purposes, sterilization, and used for agriculture and manufacturing purposes. * Neutron emitting materials include; fissile materials and neutron sources, such as the Americium/Beryllium source used for well logging. Am/Be sources can also be found in densitometers (densitometers) used for compaction testing. Neutrons can also be found in operating nuclear reactors. Neutron generators look similar to large GM tubes or other radiation detection instruments. Neutrons will activate metals in blood, i.e.., potassium iron. The Radwatch Reader is located in the HEPP and could be assigned to a deployed team. The Hazmat Specialist will read the Radwatch, however they will not re-set the device. Once the deployment is completed the Radwatch will be sent to the manufacturer for documented reading and re-zeroing the unit and returned to each task force.
