This guidanc updates and r places NICE clinical guidelin 34 (published Jun 2006). Who wrote the guideline? Th original guidelin was developed by th Newcastl Guidelin Development and Research Unit and published in 2004. Th guidelin was updated by th National Clinical Guidelin Centr e(NCGC) (formerly th National Collaborating Centr efor Chronic Conditions) in collaboration with th British Hypertension Society (BHS) in 2006 and 2011. Recommendations from th original 2004 guidelin ar emarked with footnotes. All other r commendations wer edeveloped by th NCGC in collaboration with th BHS for th 2006 and 2011 updated guidelines. Good communication is essential, supported by evidence-based information, to allow peopl to r ach informed decisions about their care.
