Huails, Universidad Severna Sombra Abstruct - This work studies the viability o f the application of computational techniques, more specifically the artificial neural networks (A“), in the identification and location o f faults in transmission lines using voltages and currents signals registered by numeric relays In one of the terminals of a Transmission line. One model of ANN was used in the fault identification and other four were used on the fault location, being one for each type: single-phase, two-phase, two-phase-earth and three-phase. INTRODUCTION Transmission lines (TLs) are designed to transport electric power generated by the production centers, for example hydro or thermal plants, through the consuming centers. Besides, TLs interconnects independent production or distribution centers, to guarantee supply and the stability of the system. Short circuits, also called faults, occur in TLs and are often provoked by factors out of control by men. Among those factors with most frequency, being responsible for the great majority of occurring outages are lightning, storms and vegetation fall. Considering that TLs possess in general long lengths, passing on densely populated areas and, sometimes, through forests with restricted access, the location of the fault can be a very slow and costly task when accomplished in a visual way by the maintenance organs, carrying delay in the re-establishment of t
