After you put jam on your hot toast and put it on the table, you accidentally pushed the toast and it fell to the floor. Although you were praying so hard for falling jam side up, the truth was still messy and ugly. The toast fell to the floor jam side down! It wasn’t the first time that you ruined your breakfast but you started to wonder why the toast always fell jam side down. Why the toast always landed jam side down? Many people have already tried to push toasts with butter/jam from their table and let them fall to the floor. Most people concluded butter/jam side down was often the case. The buttered cat paradox is a paradox based on the tongue-in-cheek combination of two bits of folk wisdom: Cats always land on their feet. Buttered toast always lands butter side down People wonder what would happen if one attached a piece of buttered toast(butter side up) to the back of a cat, then dropped the cat from a height. Background Research We don’t believe that it is just about luck or can be explained by Murphy’s Law which is “anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. After our research, we think the factors that affect the sides of toasts can be the heights of tables, the speed of the wind, the sizes of the toast, etc. In these factors, we notice that the heights of tables are more likely to determine the sides of toasts. If we change the height, we may have a different result. Here is our hypothesis. As most tables/desks are about 70-80cm high, the toast only manages half a rotation before it hits the floor. If we double the height, the toast may finish a rotation and land jam side up. Prediction Hypothesis A bag of bread
