Werther Institute of Solids Process Eng ineering and Particle Technology Technical University Hamburg-Harburg Abstract Flowsheeting p rog ram packag es are now commonly used in chemical eng ineering f or the desig n of p rocesses involving f luids. The simulation of p rocesses which involve solids or solids and f luids is not as advanced. In solids p rocessing it is still common p ractice to desig n one apparatus separately f rom the other. There is a lack of suitable methods to combine sing le apparatus models to f orm a p rocess ‘ ’ and to treat this p rocess as a whole. With the p rog ram p ackag e SolidSim , a simulation system esp ecially desig ned f or the simulation of p rocesses including solids has been develop ed. A t the p resent state of develop ment, modules are available f or classif ication, particle size reduction, crystallisation and dissolution, liquid-solid sep aration, g as-solid sep aration, agg lomeration, reaction, dry ing , convey ing and diff erent g eneral modules. The structure of the system is explained in detail and the application to a p rocess f or the treatment of contaminated sludg e is shown.
