Appellation ·Archetype ·Significance :on Culture of Dumpling

Abstract :Historical evolution of “Jiaozi”(dumpling)’s appellation derives from transition of its proto-
type and meaning． It evolutes from the title “Huntun (in Chinese means chaos)”，which shows the
greatness of the beginning of chaotic world ，to “Laowan ”，which implies the rite for the honor of the
court ;then from the “Juezi ”or “Juer ”，which presents auspicious blessing for prosperity ，to a new mu-
tual phonemic transliteration “Bianshi ”． The prevailing name “dumpling ”is formed at last ，after the
conflict and blend between the center － plain Chinese mandarin and Chinese northern mandarin． The veil
