What is the black power movement ? The black power movement (also called the African-American Civil Rights Movement)(1955–1968) refers to the movements in the United States aimed at outlawing(宣布…为非法)racial discrimination against African Americans and restoring voting rights to them in the Southern states. It was a long, primarily nonviolent struggle to bring full civil rights and equality under the law to all Americans. The movement has had a lasting impact on United States society, in its tactics, the increased social and legal acceptance of civil rights. What was the background? After white dominated Democratic Party regained political control over the South. The Republic Party---the “Party of Lincoln”---which had been the party that most blacks belonged to ,shrank to insignificance, black voter registration(黑人选民登记) was suppressed. By the early 20th century, almost all elected officials in the South were Democrats. During the same time as African Americans were being disfranchised(被剥夺公民权), white Democrats imposed racial segregation by law. Violence against blacks mushroomed(迅速增加). A movement was brewing(酝酿). Big events and important figures 1955--- Rosa Parks (the mother of the Civil Rights Movement) refused to get up out of her seat on a public bus to make room for white passengers and Rosa was arrested, which resulted in a city-wide boycott of the bus company and stirred the civil rights movement across the nation. The coversation between Rosa Parks and the driver: Driver: “Are you going to stand up?” Rosa Parks: “No, I’m not.” Driver: “Well, if you don’t stand up, I’m going to call the police and have you arrested.” Rosa Parks: “You may do that.” Great Leading Figure Rev. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR, an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African American civil rights movement and a human rights icon(偶像), who headed the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference ), made significant headway with his adherence to nonvio
