人民广场 赵宝国 Tips for the Guide: People’s Square is an open space for public life. Its evolution from a racecourse to a center of public life epitomizes the pursuit of the city in different periods. To illustrate the features of the square, the guide is advised to give a clear explanation of its layout along with its functions. In addition to its location, the square should be illustrated in the light of its influence on the political life, cultural activities, transportation system and recreational amenities of Shanghai. For a public square, the introduction to buildings should include more functional information than merely architectural descriptions. 概况 A world well-known city usually owns a famous square. As Times Square belongs to New York, and Tian’anmen Square to Beijing, Peoples Square symbolizes Shanghai. In a broad sense, People’s Square refers to the area surrounded by Xizang Road, North Huangpi Road, Wusheng Road and West Nanjing Road. In a narrow sense, however, it only covers the area including both sides of People’s Avenue and its south part. This is a large open space at the very center of the city, surrounded by buildings and facilities for administration, cultural activities, transportation, commerce and recreation. Location, boundary, character 广场 Historical development This area was part of the racecourse during the concession days. In 1850, the British colonists established their Race Club for horserace activities. In 1862, the Race Club bought an area of more than 400 acres and built a racecourse. In 1933, at the northwestern corner of the racecourse was built the Clubhouse Building (what is now No.325, West Nanjing Road). Thus, during the 1930s and 1940s, this area was known as the “No.1 Racecourse in the Far East”. In the early 1950s, the racecourse was transformed.
