B ased on the drough t strength index the periodic change of drought streng th and frequency distribution w ere analyzed, and contem porary re lationsh ip betw een the variat ion o f summ er drought strength and w a- ter vapo r transportat ion anom alies w ere also analyzed. T he result show s that the variat ion of drought strength has a rem arkable 2~ 3 year per iod and underw en t 4 clmi ate phases dur ing the last 57 years. O ccurrence of drought is m ost frequent and 4. 1 m onths in each year during 1996- 2007 m ay occur w ith variou s drought g rades, the rate is 34% .
