Hunan Construction Engineering Group, Changsha 410004, China; ) Abs tract: Column composed of structural steel and concrete- filled steel tube is a new type of heavyload- carrying composite column. An expermi ental study on them echan ical properties of the composite column, in wh ich effect of supporting cond ition has been taken into account, w as conducted for 9 short composite columns for the first tmi e. The effect of the confinem ent coefficient, the structural steel index and concrete strength on them echanical proper- ties of the composite column w as discussed, and formu las for pred icting the ultmi ate bearing capacity of the compos- ite column w ere proposed. The resu lts calcu lated by the proposed formu las are in good agreement w ith the test re- su lts. The results show that composite column has very h igh strength and ductility because of the interac
