Abstract Critical discourse analysis,also called critical linguistics, is a branch of linguistics which absorbs the concepts and methods associated with linguistics, sociology,psychology and so on. Critical discourse analysis draws much attention on the theories and methods in Systemic-functional Grammar.It is used to expose the underlying ideology and power beyond the superficial discourse,that is ,it aims to help readers cultivate critical language awareness ,realize the hidden ideology in the language and even help them avoid themselves from the control of news discourse accepting them unconsciously. This dissertation selects the news about disputed islands between China and Japan in Time and China Daily(English vision ),which are famous for their objectivity in the world. By applying the theory of critical discourse analysis, this dissertation conducts a textual analysis of the selected news reports in these newspapers by applying the quantitative and qualitative analytic methods in terms of lexical choice, transitivity, transformation ,modality and intertextuality provided by Halliday.The news reports are analyzed at three levels: text analysis, processing analysis and social analysis.In the part of social analysis, historical, social, and cultural factors are involved. Through detailed analysis, we would find that these seemingly objective and impartial reports uncover ideologies behind different language structures.
