A Semiar on English Reading Comprehension Based on SEFC I: What are the problems in English reading comprehension faced by high school students? Problems: 1.Being unable to understand the passage. 2.Being unable to form the habit of doing much English reading. 3.Having no idea of necessary reading skills 4.Being unable to use the skills or strategies appropriately 5.Being trapped by the long and complex sentences in the material 6.Drawback due to teachers poor performance or proficiency II:Guidance of the teacher 1.Attach great importance to English reading 2.Help Ss to form the habit of doing English reading.(Start from the right beginning) 3.Instruct necessary reading skills or strategies 4.Constantly practice the skills or strategies 5.Select proper material for reading training 6.Train Ss in timed reading(fast reading). 7.Teach Ss the methods to work out the problems in reading comprehension IV: Background kowledge Reading comprehension Reading strategies Reading approaches The requirements in Senior English Curriculum Standard 1.What is reading comprehension The capacity to perceive and understand the meanings communicated by texts. Getting the message that the writer intended by means of such strategies as skimming, scanning, inference, deduction and conjecture. 2. About reading strategies How readers conceive a task, what textual cues they attend to, how they make sense of what they read, and what they do when they do not understand. 3.Reading approaches The ways of handling the reading material specifically, how readers get the necessary information quickly, accurately and efficiently. 3.1 Top-down” Approach “The reader uses his or her knowledge of the topic or of the type of the text and makes predictions about what the text will contain, then these predictions are checked by reading and trying to understand the text. 3.2 Bottom-up” Approach – The reader builds up the meaning of a text on the basis of decoding smaller units; first words
