As a prolific writer, he published fifty-one books, hundreds of articles, and wrote thousands of letters. His writings have been translated in several dozen languages and to this day continue to be widely read throughout the world The 1906 Earthquake On April 18, 1906, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in North America struck San Francisco, California. The shaking of the earth was felt all the way from southern Oregon to Los Angeles and as far east as central Nevada. The quake formed a crack in the earths surface around 290 miles long. The earthquake and the great fire that followed destroyed much of the city of San Francisco. An estimated 28,000 buildings were lost, about half the citys population was left homeless, and more than 3,000 people perished.
