What do we use besides words to communicate with others? We often use gestures, body movements and facial expressions. We also call these body language. Please have a look at the following pictures and what does each mean? According to the text, who would be more likely to use the following body language, a Greek, a Canadian, a Japanese or an American? 1 A person looks downwards as he speaks to another person. 2 A person nods his head up and down to say “no”. 3 A person looks into the eyes of another person as he talks. 4 A person makes a circle with his index finger and thumb to say “OK”. Language points: 1.speak volumes (for sb/sth): be strong evidence of E.g This evidence speaks volumes for his honesty. 2. come in/into contact (with): get in touch with E.g Have you come in contact with Mary? 3. rely on: depend on E.g As babies, we rely entirely on others for food. These days we rely on computers to do our work 4. take … for example: E.g Take his experience for example. 5. to be aware of : to know/realize E.g Our boss was aware of the dangerous situation and took actions at once. 6. to indicate: to show sth is true or exists E.g Record profits in the retail market indicate a boom in the economy. Research indicates that eating habits are changing fast.
